THE CITY SPACE PANEL
Smart Spaces in the Development of Contemporary Cities
Michał Stangel, PhD
City Space Panel Leader
Silesian University of Technology
tel.
Well-managed space is the city's showpiece and a determinant of the
competitiveness of the place. Lively squares, streets and promenades with
shops, cafés, restaurants, art galleries, museums and other cultural sights
create a desirable picture of the city that attracts not only visitors but
investors and newcomers as well. These spaces must be pedestrian-friendly,
safe and attractive . more than that: they should be unique and represent
the genuine history and identity of the place. Information economy leads to
changes in the ways the places are formed and perceived, and to changes in
people's expectations who search for "innovative urban products" on the
global market of places.
The City Space Panel aims at presenting contemporary conditions,
possibilities and methods of developing attractive, well-managed city space.
The Panel will be divided into three thematic blocks. Block 1 will discuss
universal factors influencing the cities and desired principles of
developing public spaces. Block 2 will present selected elements and methods
of developing city space. Block 3 will be devoted to the experience of
Pomeranian cities in this respect.
